Shore-based training courses are run from R.N.X.S. Association premises. Practical courses can be arranged. The School is equipped with overhead projector, video, radio simulator, GMDSS simulator, PC and a range of maritime software. Other maritime navigational aids are available for use by the candidates during courses.

DAY SKIPPER

The shore based Day Skipper theory course has no prerequisites it assumes no knowledge. It teaches parts of the Boat, small boat Navigation, Safety, Seamanship and elementary Weather Forecasting.
Syllabus covers the following subjects
Parts of a boat.
Rope-work, anchors, anchorages and moorings.
Nautical terms.
Personal safety.
Rules of the road for prevention of collision at sea.
Navigational charts and instruments
Chart-work, dead reckoning, estimated position course to steer
Compass variation deviation.
Tides, tidal streams, tides at standard and secondary ports.
Passage planning, preparing a trip.
Weather forecast.

DOT COASTAL SKIPPER/YACHTMASTER
OFFSHORE

This course continues where the Day Skippers course ends. The syllabus does make provision for some revision, but the prerequisite for this course is Day Skipper Certificate.
Syllabus
Revision of compass, variation and deviation.
Revision of dead reckoning, estimated position, position lines and fixing.
Pilotage transits, leading and clearing line transits.
Tides, tidal streams, tides at standard and secondary ports, tidal anomalies.
Visual aids to navigation.
Satellite navigation system, navigating in restricted visibility.
Metrology interpreting forecast maps and faxes.
International rules of the road.
Passage planning.

Central Scotland Sea School is Recognised by the R.Y.A.
as a shore based training establishment, and is authorised to run the following courses.

Practical courses For Competent Crew, Day Skipper and Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster can also be arranged.

DIESEL ENGINE MAINTENANCE

Basic Course aimed at small boat sailors with little or no knowledge of small boat diesel engines. The course will teach the basic principals of running and maintaining the engine, how to prevent or cope with minor problems and how to rectify them. This is a classroom-based course with some hands on experience. The duration of course is one day 6-8 hours.

MARINE RADIO OPERATORS
SHORT RANGE CERTIFICATE
(SRC)

Course Duration, 8 hours minimum and includes Global Marine Distress Signaling System GMDSS. This course will teach radio voice procedure and the use of the GMDSS equipment, using GMDSS and VHF Simulators. There is an oral and written assessment.

FIRST AID

A recent addition to the Courses offered by Central Scotland Sea School. The course covers First Aid in the latest Edition First Aid Manual, with a few additions, taking into account the environment on a vessel. The course duration is 8 hours minimum.
